Description
Total Protein S measures the overall amount of Protein S in your blood — both the free, biologically active form and the form bound to a carrier protein — as opposed to the free Protein S test, which measures only the active, unbound portion. Protein S is a natural anticoagulant that works with Protein C to help regulate blood clot formation, and low total Protein S, like low free Protein S, raises the risk of developing abnormal blood clots. It's typically tested as part of a broader clotting disorder workup after an unexplained blood clot.
