TMAO details

Description

Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a compound produced when gut bacteria break down certain nutrients โ€” found particularly in red meat, eggs, and some seafood โ€” which your liver then converts into TMAO. Elevated TMAO has been studied as a marker associated with increased cardiovascular risk, potentially reflecting both dietary patterns and the composition of your gut microbiome, though it's a newer, less established marker compared to traditional cardiovascular risk factors like LDL cholesterol, and isn't yet part of most standard cardiovascular risk guidelines.
