Reticulocytes are young, recently released red blood cells, and this percentage reflects what proportion of your circulating red blood cells are these newer cells, offering a window into how actively your bone marrow is currently producing new red blood cells. A high percentage suggests your bone marrow is ramping up production, often as an appropriate response to blood loss or ongoing red blood cell destruction (hemolysis); a low percentage in the setting of anemia suggests your bone marrow isn't responding adequately, which can point toward a production problem, like a nutritional deficiency or bone marrow disorder.
