Description
The rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test is a screening test for syphilis, based on detecting antibody-like substances your body produces in response to the tissue damage caused by syphilis infection, rather than antibodies to the bacterium itself. It's a fast, widely used initial screening test, but because it can occasionally give false positives (from other infections, autoimmune conditions, or even pregnancy) or false negatives (particularly very early or very late in infection), a positive result is confirmed with a more specific treponemal antibody test before a syphilis diagnosis is made.
