Description
Prothrombin time (PT) measures how many seconds it takes your blood to clot through what's called the extrinsic and common clotting pathways, reflecting the activity of several clotting factors, many of which are made by the liver and depend on vitamin K. It's one of the two core coagulation screening tests (along with aPTT), used to evaluate bleeding disorders, assess liver function (since the liver makes these clotting factors), and check for vitamin K deficiency. PT results are also standardized into the INR, the value specifically used to monitor and adjust dosing for people taking the blood thinner warfarin.
