Osteocalcin is a protein produced by osteoblasts, the cells responsible for building new bone tissue, making it a marker of current bone formation activity — part of the ongoing, lifelong process of bone remodeling in which old bone is broken down and new bone is built. It's used in some specialized evaluations of bone metabolism and, alongside bone resorption markers (which reflect bone breakdown), can help assess the overall balance of bone turnover, sometimes used to help monitor osteoporosis treatment response, though it isn't part of routine standard bone density evaluation, which typically relies on DEXA scanning.
