Description
Mitochondrial (M2) antibodies (AMA) are autoantibodies that target mitochondria inside your cells, and their presence is strongly associated with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), an autoimmune liver condition in which the small bile ducts within the liver become progressively damaged and inflamed. A positive AMA result, especially in someone with symptoms like fatigue, itching, or abnormal liver enzymes (particularly a pattern suggesting bile duct involvement), strongly supports a PBC diagnosis, since AMA is present in the large majority of people with this condition.
