LD Isoenzyme 1 details
Description
LD isoenzyme 1 is a specific form of lactate dehydrogenase found predominantly in heart muscle and red blood cells. Historically, this isoenzyme (and its ratio to LD isoenzyme 2) was used to help detect heart muscle damage, such as from a heart attack, or significant red blood cell breakdown (hemolysis), since a rise specifically in this fraction pointed toward one of those two sources rather than a more general tissue injury. It's now used less often clinically, having been largely replaced by more specific and sensitive markers like troponin for heart injury.
