This measures your insulin level after an overnight fast, reflecting how much insulin your pancreas is producing at baseline, without the influence of a recent meal. It's used together with fasting glucose to assess insulin resistance — a state where your body needs increasingly more insulin to keep blood sugar normal, often calculated into a ratio or index (like HOMA-IR). Elevated fasting insulin, even with normal glucose, can be an early sign of developing insulin resistance and increased future diabetes and metabolic risk, sometimes appearing before glucose itself becomes abnormal.
