Description
The HIV p24 antigen is a protein from the core of the HIV virus itself, and unlike antibody tests, which rely on your immune system having had time to respond, p24 antigen can be detected earlier after exposure — often within 2-4 weeks, compared to several weeks to a few months for antibodies alone. This is why most modern HIV screening tests ('4th generation' combination tests) check for both p24 antigen and HIV antibodies together, narrowing the 'window period' during which a recent infection might otherwise go undetected.
