Description

This test screens for antibodies to HIV-1, the type of HIV responsible for the vast majority of HIV infections worldwide, indicating past exposure to and infection with the virus. It's typically part of a combination screening test that also checks for the p24 antigen (a piece of the virus itself), which allows for earlier detection than an antibody-only test, since antibodies take some time to develop after exposure. A positive screening result is always confirmed with additional, more specific testing before an HIV diagnosis is made.
