Description
Histamine is a compound released by certain immune cells (mast cells and basophils) during allergic reactions, and it's responsible for many classic allergy symptoms, like itching, hives, swelling, and flushing. This blood test measures histamine levels and is used mainly to help evaluate a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) shortly after it occurs, since histamine levels spike quickly and then fall within a short window, or to help investigate mast cell disorders, rare conditions in which mast cells release excess histamine and other chemicals, sometimes without an obvious trigger.
