Description
This antibody targets the viral capsid antigen (VCA) of Epstein-Barr virus, and unlike the IgG form, VCA IgM appears early in infection and then fades over the following weeks to months, making it a key marker for identifying a recent or currently active case of infectious mononucleosis ('mono'). It's typically checked alongside VCA IgG when mono is suspected, since a positive IgM together with a positive IgG suggests recent infection, while a positive IgG with negative IgM suggests past, resolved infection.
