Description
This is a rapid screening test for infectious mononucleosis ('mono'), based on detecting 'heterophile' antibodies that the body often produces in response to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, the most common cause of mono. It's a quick way to support a mono diagnosis in someone with typical symptoms (fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, sometimes an enlarged spleen), but it can be falsely negative early in the illness or in young children, who don't always produce a strong heterophile antibody response — in those cases, specific EBV antibody testing (VCA IgG/IgM) provides a more definitive answer.

This is a single-marker test measuring IgM antibodies to Epstein-Barr Virus. EBV is the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis. Other EBV serology assays, such as the EBV VCA IgM, should be performed to confirm serological status, active acute, past, or indeterminate infection for EBV-associated infectious mononucleosis.
