DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone produced mainly by the adrenal glands that serves as a building-block precursor your body converts into both testosterone and estrogen. It's one of several markers used to assess adrenal androgen production, and abnormal levels can be a clue toward adrenal gland disorders, including tumors or hyperplasia, or can simply reflect the natural age-related decline in DHEA production that occurs from around age 30 onward. Because DHEA fluctuates throughout the day, its more stable sulfated form, DHEA-S, is often preferred for a single reliable measurement of adrenal androgen status.
