Cottonwood is a fast-growing tree that releases pollen in spring and is also known for its distinctive fluffy seed dispersal later in the season (which, despite common belief, doesn't itself typically cause allergies — it's the earlier pollen that does). This test measures IgE antibodies specific to cottonwood pollen to check for allergic sensitization, which can cause spring seasonal allergy symptoms. It's typically included as part of a regional tree allergen panel, since cottonwood-sensitive individuals are often sensitive to other tree pollens as well.
