This test measures the exact concentration of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) — the hormone produced by the developing placenta — in your blood. Because hCG rises in a predictable pattern in early pregnancy, roughly doubling every 48-72 hours in the first weeks, quantitative results are especially useful for confirming a pregnancy is progressing normally, monitoring for possible miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy (where hCG often rises more slowly than expected), and timing early ultrasounds. Outside of pregnancy, elevated hCG can occasionally indicate certain rare tumors (germ cell or trophoblastic tumors), so this test is sometimes used as a tumor marker in those specific contexts as well.
